Scotty was an individual with a deteriorating disability: however, that did not stop his desire to live each day to the fullest.  He had a positive attitude, saw the best in people, and was an active and integral part of the Rapid City area his entire life.   Citizens who knew Scotty would often see him navigating his wheelchair on the city streets throughout the day and evening hours. Scotty faced daily challenges many of us can only imagine, however his daily routine always involved "reaching out" to the community.   He remained focused on his "Abilities" and his enthusiasm and optimistic attitude would serve as an inspiration to others.

In addition, Monte loved his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.  He made it his personal mission to share that joyous relationship with everyone.  It is a source of great comfort to his loving family and friends, knowing that he is now enjoying the presence of his Lord face to face.

Dave was a devoted Christian, husband, and father. He loved Alabama football, outlaw country music, and working on his 1954 Willys Jeep. He will be deeply missed by all of those who know him.

A visitation is scheduled for July 25, 2020, at 12p.m at Southern Heritage Funeral Home in Pelham, AL, a service will follow at 1p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network.

Jerry Munson was one of a kind. He was the youngest son of Dr. H. Ben Munson, a Rapid City physician who for many years was the only doctor performing abortions in the region. For years, there were anti-abortion protesters outside his office.

The elder Munson was charged twice with manslaughter, once for the death of a fetus and once for the death of a woman who suffered a subsequent infection after an abortion and was acquitted both times. He was a very generous donor to Democratic candidates and progressive causes in South Dakota.

At times, Jerry Munson struggled to get out from under his father's shadow. He expressed some ambivalence about the abortion issue himself. He attended Macalester College in Minnesota but did not graduate and came home to Rapid City and worked construction. Eventually, he started his own business (Jerry’s Marine), selling motorboats and branching out into the outdoor advertising business.

In 1984, at the age of 29, Jerry Munson ran for state representative as a Democrat and lost to two established Republican legislators (John Sears and Alyce McKay) by a wide margin. He ran losing races for mayor but was elected to the City Council and was then chosen to serve as council president.

In 2001, just months before al-Qaeda attacked the Twin Towers and the Pentagon, he was elected mayor of Rapid City, defeating Jim Shaw by a narrow margin. In those days, the mayor only served a two-year term, and Shaw won a rematch in 2003, basically ending Munson's career in electoral politics.

His last paying job was as a valet for Rapid City Regional Hospital, which is now Monument Health. He reportedly enjoyed that job more than either business or politics since it afforded him the opportunity to be helpful to people in need. He remained passionate about his community and was involved in efforts to protect the Rapid Creek watershed from the threat of mining or exploration for gold.

Jerry Munson died at home on April 6, the week before his 68th birthday. Apparently, he had terminal cancer.

Two days after his death, a plaintive letter from him appeared on the editorial page of the Rapid City Journal. His letter decried the level of political polarization in our community and our society.

“It seems that all we’re really good at these days is trying to vilify and categorize our fellow Americans,” Munson said. “I have an ask. It’s really quite simple. Can we please agree to disagree, but also to commit ourselves to truly trying to understand those with whom we have a difference of opinion? … It makes me sad to imagine that China or Russia can be considered a lesser enemy than our neighbors that may be registered to a different political party. … I believe we should methodically confront every problem we have and decide to fix them one at a time … (let’s) gather around each other and save our country. Please think it over.”

That was Jerry Munson’s farewell message to his community, and it does bear some consideration. This was a man who had experienced political conflict for decades in a number of contexts, but who continued to hope for better days for all of us.

The proud granddaughter of German-Russian and Irish-Canadian immigrants and descendant of early Jamestown settlers, Beth was a passionate advocate for justice and equality. Each new hat came because she believed that there are no things you don’t know how to do, only things you don’t know how to do yet, and she devoted her energies and endless curiosity to proving that true. But through all of them shone her concern for others and her dedication to making a better world.

Beth believed and participated in both informal and formal education throughout her life, achieving a Bachelor of Arts degree in Contemporary Media and Journalism in 1987, Master of Science in Technology for Training and Development in 2004, And Specialist in Education, also in TTD, in 2007.
